Together, we can make Shinfield a dementia-friendly community – and potentially even further afield too!
Did you know that 10th November was Forget-Me-Not Day? The beautiful forget-me-not is the perfect flower to represent the memory loss experienced by those living with dementia. And this day ties in perfectly with a campaign the Alzheimer’s Society has launched, which is all about how to help a stranger who seems lost and confused.
If a stranger in the street said they didn’t know where they were, would you know how to approach them? By learning what to do in this situation, we can all help. And here at Shinfield View, we’d love to teach you how… we will be visiting local businesses, schools and churches to ‘Start the Conversation’ and if you would like to get involved, please let us know!
In addition to educating our community about dementia, we’re fundraising to help Alzheimer’s Society continue their vital research in the hope that one day, we’ll find a cure for dementia. If you would like to make a valuable contribution to this worthy cause, please do get involved however you can. Here’s a couple of ideas to get you started:
• Plan a fundraising event of your own! You can order your free kit full of ideas right here.
• Turn your home or workplace blue with forget-me-nots, just like the ones in our photos that we’ve been making here at Shinfield View. Why not create a vivid window display in your living room or office? Seeing blue windows all around Shinfield would be an incredible show of support to all those affected by dementia in our community.
Whatever you decide to do to help, or if you would like to give a donation, we are collecting all funds raised centrally here at Shinfield View so we can get a total figure raised by the community as a whole, so we’d really appreciate it if you could bring all money raised to our home on School Green.
How you can help tackle dementia in 2020
We have not one but many great things to look forward to next spring, starting with our Memory Walk.
• Join us on Friday 27th March at Shinfield View – we’ll be leaving the home at 6pm for a short walk, then we’ll head back into the warm for a complimentary drink and some delicious nibbles!
• Dementia Action Week 2020 is taking place from Monday 11th until Sunday 17th May. This week, you can help us to #TurnShinfieldBlue! We need your help, along with the support of all our local businesses and local councillors, please join us as we shout about dementia to ensure that everyone affected, both the individual, and their family carers, knows they’re not alone.
